Hello everyone!!!
I can’t believe an entire week has gone by since I've arrived!!!I will try to go through the week to give you a taste of my life thus far in England....
On Monday, as Laurence was in school and there wasn’t much to do around the house, Deborah took me to Windsor. I got to see Eton college (learning about the curriculum of this very prestigious school that both prince William and Harry went to made me feel very ignorant indeed) and then she dropped me at Windsor castle to explore.
It was beautiful and huge and a bit hard to wrap my mind around the fact that someone on this earth actually lives in such places. Craziness.
Tuesday was rather uneventful. Most of my day was spent doing things around the house and then constructing full on Viking armor, including helmet, shield and sword, for Laurence’s school activity day.
The whole week is actually activity day—which means on Wednesday I got to accompany him and his classmates to a school trip to the woods to do orienteering, leaf-collecting, shelter building, and other supervised activities. It was actually very fun, although exhausting.
Today was another activity day—I went to the national gallery of London. As sophisticated and elegant as you may be imagining this, let me pop another picture in your head: A two hour drive (its not far, but traffic is awful) in a bus with 60 nine-year-olds. Not quite the same is it?
Despite the stress small spaces with lots of noise and energy can produce, it was a good day. I got to see lots, which was wonderful, and also, thanks to the totally unmerited love and affection nine year olds are so ready to give, seemed to be the most popular “grown-up” of the day. I am decided that nine years old is the best age. (:
After the museum I watched two hours of ballet—one of Laurence’s lessons and one of his friend’s, and then made supper and painted the already constructed armor.
Soooo…I know this is probably not the exciting update some of you all might have imagined, but I guess it’s a pretty good slice of my life right now. I cant believe what a short amount of time I have left here!!!
Although it may sound a bit mundane, it’s actually been incredible to be in a family setting again. As much as I do like sometimes being independent and city-saavy, it’s so nice to be with a family again, sharing meals and talking and doing simple chores. Its been great getting to know Deborah and she has been so sweet to me! It’s also really nice knowing that I’m helping them out and that they like having me here. I was so afraid they wouldn’t like me!!
In the future, there is lots of talk of shows and places to visit, etc, so I’m sure Ill have more updates soon. I also found out that Kai, my German friend I met in Paris, has an internship in London, so hopefully I’ll get to meet up with him soon and properly explore the city, and hang out with some grownups instead of a mass of nine year olds, haha. (:
